The Italian word of the week: “bello”

The word bello is an adjective that means: beautiful, good looking, handsome, fine, pretty, nice, pleasant, fair.
This adjective (only masculine, singular or plural) has a peculiarity in his declination. When bello is after nouns his declination is like the other adjectives: (masculine sing. bello - pl. belli)

E’ un libro bello ed interessante - Sono libri belli ed interessanti

When bello is before nouns and if:

1. noun starts with s + consonant, gn, pn, ps, x, z, the singular adjective is bello and the plural is begli:

E’ un bello zaino - Sono dei begli zaini

2. noun starts with other consonats, the singular adjective is bel and the plural is bei:

Ieri ho visto un bel film - Abbiamo visto ultimamente molti bei film
