Italian comparative if clauses
Comparative hypothetical clauses are sentences which establish an hypothetical comparison with the main clause. In this case the verb is always in the past of subjunctive. We use imperfect of subjunctive if the main clause is in the present and past perfect of subjunctive if the main clause is in the past tense. Comparative if clauses begin with come (se), quasi (che), or non altrimenti che se (less used); example:
Mia madre mi tratta come (se) fossi ancora un bambino;
Mia madre mi ha trattato quasi (che) fossi stato ancora un bambino;
Il lavoro è stato eseguito dal ragazzo non altrimenti che se / come se fosse stato un esperto.
