How to use the particle “ci” in Italian

-->

We use the particle ci in many cases. I’ll try to explain you all cases in which italians say ci.

  1. It is a reflexive, reciprocal, direct and indirect object pronoun (1th person plural), example:

    Noi ci alziamo alle 8,00 ogni mattina (reflexive pronoun)
    Noi ci sposiamo il mese prossimo (reciprocal pronoun)
    Mario non ci ha visto (direct pronoun= noi)
    Paolo ci ha regalato un libro (indirect pronoun = a noi)

  2. to substitute a word or a phrase introduced by a, in, con, su; example:

    “Credi all’oroscopo?” - “No, non ci credo” (ci = all‘oroscopo)
    “Credi in Dio?” - ” Sì, ci credo” (ci = in Dio)
    “Quando esci con Paola?” - “Ci esco stasera” (ci = con Paola)
    Mi hanno promesso un aiuto, ma non ci conto (ci = su di loro)

  3. ci is an adverb of place and often we use it to avoid repeating the name of a place which we have already mentioned.

    Example:
    “Vai al cinema?” - ” Sì, ci vado spesso” (ci = al cinema)

  4. In everyday speech the particle ci is often used in reply to a question with the verb “avere” and means possession. In this case it becomes ce, example:
    “Hai un po’ di soldi?” - ” Sì, ce li ho.”
