Present and past Italian gerund

-->

The present gerund is formed from the infinitive of the verb and its endings are:

- are > - ando                     andare > andando
- ere> - endo                      correre > correndo
- ire> - endo                       venire > venendo

It is used when an action in the dependent clause happens at the same time as an other action in the main clause, example:Guidando la macchina ascolto la radio
Mangio, guardando la televisione

The past gerund is formed with:

the gerund form of avere or essere + the past participle of the verb

It is used when an action in the dependent clause takes place before with respect to the main clause, example:
Avendo lavorato molto tutto il giorno adesso sono stanco.

All the pronouns (direct and indirect object and combined pronouns) and ci and ne are used always after the gerund, example:
Scusa ma ho molto da fare e non posso parlare con te, andandotene mi farai un gran favore
Vedi quello stereo ha veramente un buon prezzo, comprandolo fare un affarone!
